I have devoted much attention to firearms, to which I have even tried to make several modifications; and I still engage in all the improvements they are susceptible to. After having studied and tested all the systems invented to this day, I must recognize the superiority of Mr. Lefaucheux's, as being the simplest, the safest, and the one that provides complete isolation between the lock and the part of the barrel where ignition occurs, in guns loaded from behind; because the communication of gases that develop inside the lock is a most serious inconvenience, one which, before Mr. Lefaucheux, could not be overcome. A double gun, carbine with a broken grip, which I had made this year, has the invaluable advantage of being able to be cleaned, if desired, without disassembling a single piece, and of being able to fire more than five hundred shots without being stopped by fouling. Since Mr. Lefaucheux's invention, his system has been subjected by me to the most rigorous tests, often repeated, without the slightest deterioration occurring; I therefore think that for hunting weapons, pistols, and even the war carbine, the Lefaucheux system offers undeniable advantages.
